THE INFANT BAPTISM QUESTION? BY STEVE FINNELL
Catechism of the Catholic Church
ARTICLE 1
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."5( Ref. WWW.vatican.Va)
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, baptized infants are freed from sin without believing that Jesus is the Son of God. Baptized infants are born again without believing Jesus was raised from the dead by the Father. Baptized infants become members of the body of Christ without confessing Jesus as the Son of God.
Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. (NASB)
Infants are not capable of believing; therefore they not candidates for Christian baptism.
Are unbaptized infants lost if they die before they are old enough to believe and be baptized. Of course not. Infants do not inherit sin. Men are deemed sinners when they themselves sin. Infants are not guilty of Adam's sin at conception nor at any other time.
You can be added to the Catholic Church without believing in Jesus Christ, however the Lord only adds those who believe and are baptized to His church.
