Am I in Hustler Magazine?

Today is July 23rd and that means my small article should be in the October edition of Hustler, due to come out today. I wrote a short piece in listener feedback about military recruitment in schools and suggested that if they can recruit to those under 18 years old, Hustler should do the same.

The magazine is always a couple of months ahead at the news stand, on line at the hyperlink you will only see the July issue. (WARNING, YOU MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER TO VIEW THIS STUFF)

I haven't gone across the street to see if the new copy is on the news stand yet. There are no pictures of me, that would be even too scary for the October, (Halloween) edition.

Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Brad Friedman at Brad blog and Thom Hartmann have all been in Hustler this year.

Now it's my turn.

What? No comments on this one?
I know some people read this blog, I just wonder why most are afraid to leave a comment?

Unknown said...

Have you noticed you got the most comments when you posted about cooking?
Afraid? I think you are asking yourself the wrong question.
The question you choose, contains the answer. If no one is responding to you then it must be them?
You recently made a comment about that you were glad you work for a commercial station in a conversation concerning KHSU. That distances you from the crowd and concerns of the community. So what?
And the tone of that comment is why people do not respond to your blog.
So are you in Hustler? I don't know but I bet a bunch of them are under your bed.
Be humble and less creepy and people will want to play with you.

Kathy, thanks for responding. This lets me know everything is working. As for working for a commercial station, I will admit that I sought work at KHSU and was turned down. I would have made similar decisions about keeping Democracy Now!, Eco-news and Thursday night talk. I would probably be out of a job had they accepted me. So I'm glad I am where I am.
I thought if I did a couple of blogs that weren't real news maybe more people would respond. That's why the Hustler and Diva of the Dark posts. Didn't mean to be creepy. I guess vampires are a bit creepy though.

Creepy is not just the vampire. And btw, vampire is not the message in that photo, red lips are the message. Dude, I would think you are looking to take a place within an audience that is more sophisticated than that.

What you would have decided about DN is besides the point. When you make it about you, you shrink reader interest.

There are questions and conversations here beyond Tom World. That might be the conversation you wish to join.

Progressive radio, or any FACT BASED media needs to be well represented and supported.

What is your interest? Picking up the listeners KHSU would lose if DN was gone or helping to empower the concerns of the community that wants DN to stay on the air at the station they have donated to?

You do great with your on air programs and with your support for the Vets. On your blog you bring it all back to you. Sure you would have made different choices. But the conversation is not about that. The Eureka Reported did not run a headline that said... WHAT WOULD TOM DO?

When you get into Mother Jones let me know.

Will KGOE do a psa on the KHSU gathering on the 30th?

Tom Sebourn said...

We used to run Mother Jones until the radio version was discontinued.
Democracy Now, is and would still be on KMUD at noon so I don't see kgoe picking that up if KHSU drops it. My take on the KHSU thing was to point out that people like these shows and that if they were taken away, someone else would probably pick them up.
I will do a psa about the KHSU gathering as I think it is important to many of KGOE's listeners.

Thanks for doing a PSA on the meeting.

So when you choose which pictures of women you will post and what polls you will run what sort of conversation do you wish to create?

Tom Sebourn said...

I haven't done any polls for a while. They don't stay active for very long. I should take down the ones that are still up since no one can vote on them. As for women on the blog, I have no criteria for that. I met two of them and got pictures with them so I put those up(Cynthia and Desi with Brad). Dr. Laura and Stephanie Miller were just for fun. They seem so opposite until you look into their backgrounds. When they were younger,
Stephanie was more of a conservative and Dr.Laura was quite provocative. I chose the least creepy, most flattering Dr. Laura picture I could find. One where she was wearing clothes.
The Stephanie picture is fair as that is how she was dressed on the float at the gay pride parade in Hollywood this year

What conversation do those pictures create?

Tom Sebourn said...

Not much on the blog. I do get some reaction in person about the Dr. Laura photo. A couple of people have said she looked good then.
The Cynthia and Desi w/Brad pix are the only ones of me on the internet that I know of. Some people had asked why there were no pix of me, so here they are.
I don't think I photograph well.
I have a face for radio and as many chins as a Chinese phone book.

So, why do you suppose no one comments on your blog?

Fear would not be my first guess.

Tom Sebourn said...

Because they are all reading the Humboldt Hearald. By the way, I got a psa on for khsu and one about the code enforcement meetings thanks to you Kathy and info at the Hearald about no one covering the code thing.

Tom Sebourn said...

Sorry for the late reply but I don't do this all day long and the internet kept going down here.

There is the possibility that people don't find this blog very interesting. I don't really have a niche like most blogs. My interests are cooking, especially BBQ, beer, politics and things in the sky.

back to those pictures.
Perhaps you do not have pictures of provocatively dressed women in your work place. Perhaps it is not allowed.
Now why would that be? Why would 'fun' pictures like that not be allowed in the work place?

Tom Sebourn said...

Pictures like what? Stephanie Miller? Dr.Laura?

Tom Sebourn said...

Remember where my work place is.
We are a radio station and there is more than one station here. We have pictures in all of the studios and some are provocative. Some album(cd) covers are outragous. I don't see any pictures on the blog that would be out of line in an environment like this.

Unknown said...

I was speaking about the provocative pictures because IN MY OPINION, ( caps for warning of presentation without facts or serious polling ) I thought I heard you say you were wanting folks to comment on your blog. My opinion is that some of our community would feel the pictures objectified women, and so would be uninvited to comment. To some, such pictures would imply that posts can not be taken seriously about important issues because these photos might indicate a lack of certain, what some might consider, basic sensibilities.
In the work place such pictures could be considered sexual harassment.
My initial point was they may not represent your intent to create a responding community for your blog.
But then again. They may.
This is just a blog. And there are no rules and you are very free to do as you wish and as you enjoy.
I could be completely absolutely wrong about all of this.
When I saw the pictures I thought you did not wish to be taken seriously. That they were a way to say you were just playing at trying to write a serious blog. I took them as a sign of immaturity. That is what they implied to me.
I am only one person. Just me. So that is the extent of my research for my response.

Tom Sebourn said...

Kathy, you must be talking about Dr.Laura and Stephanie Miller. These women chose to objectify themselves by having their pictures taken like this and then posting them on the web. If they don't seem to mind, I don't see why anyone else should.

As far as people taking this blog seriously or not, I don't really care either way. I don't put anything up that I think is untrue.
And while I can't be sure the astronaut saw aliens, I can be sure that I saw a UFO when I was 15 years old. Because of this I don't disregard what others say they have seen.

O.K. I'm there. The cover has Brooke Taylor on it. It is the October issue and is available at some of the shadier news stands now.
My comments are in the listener feedback section.
Don't look at the pictures.
